Wes called me into the family room to see the bird in the hemlock. This is a not unusual request in the winter when the bird feeders are out, but definitely out of the ordinary in July. I snapped a couple of pictures with my long lens of the bird in the tree, but then it flew to the ground and I was able to get an even better picture. It’s still not the best as it was taken through the sliding glass deck door, but still usable. After studying the bird field guide, we’re thinking it’s a Broad-winged Hawk, but are not sure. I emailed a picture or three to Corey, but as I’m typing this on Friday evening, I hadn’t heard back from him. Stay tuned for an update.

Just after I hit publish on this post, I received an email from Corey and he agreed it was a juvenile Broad winged Hawk. Whooo hooo! a lifer for Wes and me–and in our own backyard!
