Finger on the Shutter

Wes and I took Natasha and Andrew to RamsHorn yesterday. We haven’t been there in over a year and they had never been there.  We found some big changes.  The walkway into it is now gravel instead of dirt/mud, the bridge has been reinforced and is much sturdier and the observation tower is closed temporarily for repairs.  It looked like a tree had fallen on the wooden walkway to the tower as there was cut up logs and branches all around.

Andrew had to peruse the map to make sure we were going in the right direction. 

The kids wanted to go out onto the dock and down onto the boat launch to feel the water.  The boat launch is very rocky, so I made them lie down before putting their hands in the water, and I kept a grip on both of them.

Of course, there was  spring flowers.  They wanted to pick them, but I told them we had to leave the flowers there for other people to enjoy too.  Five minutes later, another couple was walking the path behind us and stopped to admire this same cluster of flowers. Andrew told them not to pick any because everyone wanted to look at them.  I love it when lessons sink in. 

Wes was looking constantly for birds, but we didn’t see many.  We heard a pileated woodpecker, saw red-winged blackbirds, crows,  and one duck. We saw a turtle too, but he wasn’t flying. 

Natasha could put her whole hand in the holes the woodpeckers have made in this tree.

There was one small patch of marsh marigolds, but the bright yellow was visible for quite a distance. We found a feather.

The walk back to the car is slightly uphill for quite a distance.  We were a lot slower going out then in. 

I hope their appetites for dinner weren’t spoiled by  late afternoon ice cream cones.
