Wes and I bought some tomatoes on the bargain shelf at Story Farmstand yesterday. I blanched them to loosen the skins, cut them up, and put them in the pot with softened onions. After adding some herbs and simmering for a while, the kitchen smelled heavenly.
Many years ago, when my dad had a big vegetable garden, we would spend the entire Labor Day weekend in my parents’ kitchen, making tomato sauce with the over abundance of tomatoes. It was hot, tiring work, and it took me years to get over my distaste for making tomato sauce.
Now, I’m making it again, in small quantities. Some to be eaten tonight, and a quart to be frozen, to be enjoyed in January when the snow is piled up, and I can make the kitchen smell like summer.
Maybe I’ll buy some more tomatoes……
Homemade sauce or just stewed tomatoes canned are the best!
